The English language programme, financial mathematics, business administration programme, computer security and forensics, and other programmes at the university consistently receive better scores from students. Moreover, the University of Greenwich is a five-time winner of the Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education and holds a Silver rating award in the  Teaching Excellence Framework . Also, it is rated as one of the most environmentally friendly in the UK by the People & Planet Green League Table.

History

The University of Greenwich in the UK was founded by Frank Didden in 1890. At that time, it used to be known as Woolwich Polytechnic and was the second-oldest polytechnic in all of the United Kingdom. Inspired by Quintin Hogg’s principles, Woolwich Polytechnic initially focused on education combined with social and religious functions. By 1894, the focus shifted more towards providing higher technical education. This led to the formation of part-time day courses in association with the Ministry of War (Woolwich Arsenal).

In 1970, Woolwich Polytechnic was renamed Thames Polytechnic as a result of an amalgamation with part of Hammersmith College of Art and Building. In the years that followed, Dartford College (1976), Avery Hill College of Education (1985), Garnett College (1987), and parts of Goldsmiths College and the City of London College (1988) were incorporated. Thames Polytechnic was granted its first university status by the government in 1992, after which it was finally renamed as University of Greenwich.

In 1993, the Thames College of Health Care Studies officially merged, as a full faculty, with the University of Greenwich. In 1996,  Natural Resources Institute  (NRI), earlier a UK government research agency, also joined hands and officially amalgamated with the university. Today, the University of Greenwich is recognized as a renowned modern public university with campuses in London and Kent.
