Please take note of this important change to the English language requirements for the University of Wolverhampton’s September 2025 intake.

The University of Wolverhampton has recently changed its admission policy to guarantee that all Master of Research (MRes) applicants are completely equipped for a research-intensive degree's academic and language requirements.

What does this mean for you?

All MRes applicants will be subject to the following English language policy as of September 2025:

  • Medium of Instruction (MOI) letters will no longer be recognised as proof of English proficiency.
  • All applicants must present a recognised English language test accepted by the university.

This applies to all international applicants, including those who have deferred from earlier intakes, regardless of their educational background or previous country of study.

Why This Matters to You

  • Better research foundations: MRes students regularly work with complex data, academic literature, and research writing. Meeting these English language standards guarantees that all students are prepared to start studying from day one.
  • International recognition: Business organisations and educational institutions globally recognise exams such as TOEFL and IELTS. Including one with your application drastically improves your academic and career prospects.
  • Consistency and fairness: The university guarantees a standardised admissions procedure that applies equally to all applicants by removing Medium of Instruction (MOI) letters and adopting only globally accepted English language test results.
  • Expanding success preparation: Good English language skills are essential for coursework, thesis writing, and communicating with academic supervisors; they are not simply for admission.
  • Streamlined admission procedure: Using internationally accepted English language test scores simplifies and helps speed up the application procedure for international applicants, reducing any complexities.

The Master of Research is a highly rewarding academic degree. Your ability to critically analyse complex academic materials, write formally at a high level, and engage with supervisors and pitch presentations are all necessary for success, so having a high proficiency in English will be incredibly useful in all aspects of your academic and professional career.
